The history of the Hartke brand name goes as far back as the late 1970s, when electronics gurus Larry Hartke and Ron Lorman started tinkering with the first model of aluminum cone drivers. However, 1980 was the year that witnessed the release of their very first products, an aluminum cone, free edge tweeter and a two way bookshelf system with an eight-inch aluminum woofer; releasing all these under the Hartke name. The two of them created the first aluminum bass speaker cones in 1984 when Lorman was working as a stage manager and engineer at New York's famous Bottom Line Club. The aluminum cone was used in one of Jaco Pastorius' 810 cabinets, and because of its solid sound decided to use the cabinet in all his shows. In 1985, the sound of Pastorius' 810 had become popular and Hartke began mass production of aluminum cone bass cabinets on a large scale. Cabinets such as the 115XL, 410XL and the 810XL, which have been used on stages worldwide by players such as Pastorius, Darryl Jones, Jack Bruce, Marus Miller, Garry Tallent, Will Lee, Nate Watts, Tim King, Marco Mendoza and a number of others.
